Wool, cotton, polyester, linen… most men cringe upon hearing these because sad to say, most people (both men and women) don’t really know the importance of choosing the right fabric for their clothes. In the industry, experts, such as designers or tailors understand that the suit fabric is one of the most important aspects in making a garment and could make or break whatever design you have. This is the reason why designers and the like are given comprehensive training on textiles. The wrong fabric can ruin a design because different fabrics behave differently. Fortunately for custom made suits, you don’t have to go to school to learn what fabric is optimal for your suit, after all there are only a handful of fabrics designed for suiting. However, even within that narrow selection the composition is an important consideration depending on how, where, and how often you plan to wear your suit.

Then there’s the matter of how many suits to own. Alan Behr Alan Behr , an entertainment lawyer and moonlighting journalist on New York’s Upper East Side, keeps 15 suits in his closet to cover every possible scenario. “If your company has a one-day-a-week casual policy, you’ll need at least four suits to rotate, plus a fifth in case someone calls a meeting on Friday,” says Behr, who favors Savile Row’s Henry Poole Henry Poole and, unlike a lot of fashion editors, pays full price for his suits. “I keep five suits for the warm weather, five for cool and some additional ultra-lights for boiling hot days.”

Joseph Rosenfeld Joseph Rosenfeld , an image consultant in Dallas with a large corporate clientele, recommends that men get started with a three-suit foundation: one dark blue, one dark gray and one black or, if you can’t get away with that, dark brown. “From there you can branch out into a blue with a Glen plaid, a gray with pinstripes and perhaps some individualistic lighter tones,” says Rosenfeld. “Men are fickle, and eventually they get bored or tired. Adding a new suit or two now and then makes them feel powerful and good about themselves.”

In the end, looking sharp in any suit is primarily a matter of color, proportion and individual style, and the best way to get the right suit for you is to find a good salesman and stick with him. Alan Flusser recommends visiting high-end men’s stores and then either buying or taking the ideas somewhere you can afford. “Either way, you’ve got to find a mentor,” he notes. “It’s usually not a woman or a fashion designer, but a salesman who has the tastes you like.”

The Importance of Grooming & Dressing for a Job Interview

First impressions are seldom more important than on a job interview. Before you have had a chance to discuss your skills, you have already been judged on your appearance and clothing. A job interview is not the place for a trendy fashion statement. Your prospective employer should see that you take the interview seriously and that you have taken care to look your best. To check out what is appropriate, visit the company beforehand to pick up an application or call the human resources department. If you are confident about your appearance, you will project the right professional image.

Interview Dress for Men

A solid-color suit in wool or a wool blend, either navy or dark gray, clean and pressed, is appropriate for a job interview. Wear it with a long-sleeved white or light blue shirt and a silk tie in a solid color or small stripe. Wear leather lace-up or slip-on shoes with dark, mid-calf trouser socks that won’t show skin when you sit. Wear a watch, class ring and wedding ring if desired but no other jewelry, and remove earrings and any other visible piercings. Be sure that your hair is neatly trimmed and facial hair is well-groomed. Remember that a comb-over doesn’t fool anyone; a close-cropped cut is becoming to balding men. Fingernails must be clean and trimmed. Avoid strong-smelling after-shave or cologne. Carry a briefcase or portfolio. Even if the job itself would not require a suit, err on the conservative side by wearing a suit to the interview. A less formal approach would be khakis and a dark blazer.

It has often been said that first impressions are eternal. Be it inherent in human nature or merely a cultural phenomenon, we will all tend to judge initially ergo enduringly, by appearance. In this regard, attorneys are perhaps held to a higher standard than virtually any other group of professionals.

A well-dressed attorney is immediately perceived as successful. In an arena where the ante is, at times, literally “life or death”, the potential penalty for failure is obvious. As perception often becomes reality, opinion based on appearance can serve as either a significant benefit or a substantial detriment in pursuit of a favorable legal deposition. Opposing counsel, the presiding judge, and most importantly, the jurors are all prone to be affected by presentation – well above and beyond “just the facts”.
